Hill School
Hill School was the one-room school house that Doris attended. The school is still standing today and has been turned into a garage. Doris and her sisters walked two miles to school. Sometimes her ma would give her a ride in the car though. It was a long cold walk in Wisconsin. For lunch, Doris carried a glass quart jar of milk with salt and pepper in it and a piece of bread wrapped in a cloth.
The teacher would warm the jar of milk on the wood stove, then Doris would dip her bread in it for lunch. In the fall they had fresh apples and Doris always loved that. She especially liked sour green apples with salt on them. Sometimes Doris and her sister Arlene (Arla) would eat green apples until they got a tummy ache.
